Rumpf Saddle Nov 20

Our wading in the Black River yesterday didn't locate any trace of the
AAWT so we picked a spot where the spur came close to the river as our
departure spot. This was about 1/2 km down stream from our camp. The
regrowth after the 06-07 fires looked pretty thick on the spur so we
got up at 4 AM and breakfasted and packed in the dark. We were ready
to wade down to the spur as soon as we had enough light to see the
river bottom. By 7 AM we had filtered our water and set off up the
spur. We took 5 litres each as the weather was still hot and our climb
for the day was 1.2 km.

The regrowth on the spur was bad. Dogwood 2 m high and thick bracken
made walking very hard even though the track was up a very old fire
break and there was a faint foot track from time to time. We had
roughly 6 km of mostly steep climb or descent in this before getting
to Macmillan's track and easier walking. We stopped for lunch at 11
and had numerous rest stops but that 6 kms took us 6 hours and left us
pretty buggered.

Macmillan's track took us to the Jamieson-Licola road which we
followed to Middle Ridge road. Here we were meant to do some more
mountain climbing but Chapman suggested taking Middle Ridge road in
bad our dry weather. We felt the heat constituted bad weather and Lee
was limping with heal pain. We arrived at Rumpf Saddle about 5 PM too
tired to go looking for water so we set up our tent and had a dry
supper. Rain started soon after we got the tent up.

1.2 km climb, ??400m descent, 15.7 km.

It was a day we'd rather forget but will remember with dread forever.
