Cann River-Young

Far east Gippsland is mostly forest with minor patches of farm land clearing. From Cann River to Canberra we traveled the Monaro highway which is windy and narrow in Victoria but turns into a pretty good road by NSW. We climbed steadily from near sea level to 1100 m as we crossed the Great Dividing Range. The forest decreases as you climb and it opens up into grazing land in NSW.

We passed through Canberra almost without mishap, one missed turn and the usual hassle trying to find a petrol station near the freeway.

We had a pie for lunch in Yass and trundled on to Young. We set out to have tea at a pub, but they all looked a bit rough so we had pasta at an Italian place instead and enjoyed that.

Young is an old gold mining town, so I'll be looking out for signs of that as we drive out tomorrow.
