Port Augusta - Tanunda

The drive was beautiful, starting in arid Port Augusta, with not much more than salt bush, winding through eucalypts in Horrocks Pass and back into farming on the other side of the South Flinders Ranges. We drove through the picturesque Clare Valley wine area just as the rain began. At Tarlee we swung off the main road and headed over to the Barossa Valley through Kapunda and Nurioopta to Tanunda. Bethany is a small village virtually part of Tanunda and is one of the oldest German settlements in Australia. They brought vines and wine making skills and we have them to thank for some of the best wines in Australia today. When we were here on our long service leave in 98-99 we fell in love with Bethany Wines white port which to our vast disappointment was not available in Western Australia. So, one of our first stops here was Bethany Wines where we picked up a 5 litre jug of port tapped straight out of the big wooden wine barrel!

We ate at a pub in Tanunda, very good food.

South Australians can not build roads, they were crap in 98-99 and they still are. Big raspberry from Brian.
