June 1 2008 Whitehorse still

It was chilly this morning so we sat around drinking coffee until 10 then we went to the Beringia Centre. This is a museum dedicated to the glacial time of mammoths, saber tooth tigers and giant bison and beavers. Lots of fossils from this time show up in the gold sluicing areas, including complete frozen mammoths. This is a very well presented museum, and the staff were excellent.

After lunch we went for a walk on the east side of the Yukon River to the power station to have a look at the fish ladder. It was closed, too early in the season I guess, but we had a pretty good view of it anyway and could see no fish moving up. They are all still out in the ocean getting fat for the journey, a sentiment applauded by bears everywhere, but they wish they would just HURRY! Me too.
