We woke to the sound of rain on the roof, a big blow for man kind, because you can see Denali from Fairbanks, so we were looking forward to catching glimpses of it as we drove south to the park. Instead we got views of lots of clouds! We arrived at the small town of Healey about mid day and got ourselves a spot in the Denali RV Park and Motel. Quite nice it is too, with views of mountains or trees out of all windows.
Once we set up camp I tried the cable hookup here as we've been having some difficulties with this. Our picture has a few lines in it and the sound has snaps and crackles. We were delighted to see that we were in for a double header of Monk, one of our rare favorite TV programs that runs sporadically in Perth. Most of our TV watching is footy or news or travel programs. Sadly, the hookup here is as bad as anywhere, so I guess we have another problem to get sorted out.
Once we finished our Monk watching, we headed off to Denali park about 8 kms south of Healey and started getting sorted out for the tours etc we wanted to do. Just into the park we ran across a mother moose and her calf. He was pretty adventuresome and Lee managed to get a good photo.
One of the things we wanted to do was see the sled dog display. Denali has a history of using sled dogs to patrol and manage the park in winter. They keep that going still today, to avoid the cost, noise and unreliability of snow mobiles. As you can see above one of the bitches had puppies, pretty cute! It was a good tour, and free! I remain convinced that the talk was given by smokey the bear with a man mask on!
