June 14&15 2008 Anchorage

Well faithful bloggees, I've been slack again, but it's hard to get excited about writing about the last two days.

We woke early on the 14th to break camp and head down the track to Anchorage. The day was brilliant sunshine with not a cloud in the sky, which did not please us at all since we had not seen THE mountain and now we were on the way out. By the time we were at the middle of the range which runs roughly east-west the mountains were in cloud, so we felt better, knowing that Denali would once again be invisible and we weren't missing anything. The drive down to Anchorage was pleasant enough although we had a bit of rain, which could explain the temperate rain forest jungle we passed through. we found our chosen RV park by about 1:30 and settled in for lunch. Later we found a Carr's which seems to be Safeway here and stocked up on supplies. Ho-hummm.

Today (15th) we went downtown to book a rail-boat tour down to Seward and into Resurrection Bay to see glaciers. We had lunch at the open-air markets and then went for a walk between the airport and the bay. The highlight of that was coming across a moose grazing happily beside the trail. He was nice to see but reminded me that earlier I'd been thinking that there was no bear worries here due to the road and walking traffic. Needed to re-think that one!

The picture is from Delta junction the other side of Fairbanks, not really on this drive, but interesting!

Hi there Brian and Lee
I just wish I had something witty to say but I think I ate so much chicken for dinner it has blocked blood flow to my brain.
You are like a private Getaway, but yours is interesting. But, Brian, I sense a severe lack of geological talk. Next post must have reference to at least one dubious rock type and a questionable natural process. Go on - you know you want to!!!
By the way - the Tongariro Circuit was AWESOME! Thanks for the recommendation!

Have fun.
Stevo.
