We had a 6 AM breakfast, a very strange one as our hostess was upset
that some people left without paying for supper. She prattled on in
French and we did our best but failed to understand. We got away at
6:30 and began the climb in fog. Today we begin our crossing of the
Pyrenees. St. Jean to Roncesvalles is a 27 km walk with a 1.3 km climb
then a 450 m descent. For the most part the climb was relentless but
only moderately hard. Around 10 AM the mist started to lift and soon
we found ourselves in a sunny treeless alpine wonderland. As we walked
along we came across herds of horses with foals and herds of sheep
grazing or sleeping. Before mid day we crossed the border into Spain,
a barb wire fence and cattle grid. Eventually we descended into
Roncescesvalles at about 2 PM. The refugio doesn't open until 4 PM so
we have to wait.
OK, we're in. It is a 100 bed dormitory so we don't expect to get much
sleep tonight!
