May 9, Ruitelan

The route today followed a sparkling small river up through steep
valleys to Ruitelan. We had meant to take the more strenuous and
scenic high route, but we missed the turn, which was bad luck, but it
was foggy up there anyway, so maybe it was good luck! The low lands
are timbered by big poplar trees which they harvest, cutting them into
3m lengths and stacking them in piles. Some were also cut into planks
and stacked for drying. Higher up the hills are covered with flowering
shrubs. We passed under a huge highway, sometimes on bridges hundreds
of meters high.
We got here by mid-day so we had lunch then got beds in the refugio,
had our showers, washed our clothes and hung them in the sun.
Oh, the other thing. Picnic tables here are made of stone work and
sawn granite. These guys don't mess around. When they go out to build
something, they aren't thinking 'this will be good for ten years' they
are thinking 'This will be good. Really good. Forever.'
